Datashert, yes I see from the data sheet that there are extra diodes in the D, but exactly what protection do they provide? Unsure about whether the L will work with your motor? Tutorials on that site are have been known to be wrong. The most common method to drive DC motors in two directions under control of a computer is with an H-bridge motor driver.

L93ne has output clamping diodes for inductive transient suppression while the LNE does not. Assume you have only one motor connected with the enable tied to Arduino Pin 3, and the two direction controls tied to Arduino Pins 4 and 5. If it gets too hot to touch, you can’t use it with your motor.
Since you’re going to drive a motor you will want to use clamping diodes to avoid inductive spikes from the motor killing the output transistors in the chip. Hook up the circuit and run your motor while keeping your finger on the chip.

Pick the “D” version because it has built in flyback diodes to minimize inductive voltage spikes.
