In this series, the protagonist features in adventures that showcase his cqpitan activities and personality. Luckily for readers, Perez-Reverte is a talented enough author that his storytelling proficiency and handling of language makes artruo for most of this.

This novel is told in first person from the perspective of an old man recalling the story as it happened in his youth. His friend offers him lucrative and more permanent employment of his sword and services but is vague about what that employment it.

But it was certainly entertaining. As one might surmise from the fact that my last post to Goodreads commemorating my finishing volume 1 of a massive literary novel after about 2 yearsI have found popular fiction a refreshing change of capifan. Also The author made an odd choice and chose to write the book in the first person as a story told by Inigo, The captain’s 13 yrs old squire. Since the narrator is Alatriste’s own man, I expected to know a bit more about the man than I have learned thus far.
I recommend this book to anyone that likes reading action packed adventures and appreciate historical novels. Courageous on the bloody battlefield, In days of peace, still more honor you acquire.

You will love getting to know Alatriste, and you will love the book. I’m sure the translation is just as good but there are nuances in the Spanish language that make this book even more enjoyable to read. It is an engaging yarn in and off itself.
Como ya dije, es una historia breve. The narrator in the story is recounting tales from his youth – so it’s a little like listening to my grandmother ramble o I am a big fan of Arturo Perez-Reverte, but this book was a little bit of a disappoint me for me. I wish the author had included a note commenting on which of the characters are historical personages. I could tell you the whole “story” in about four sentences. Details from body lice to excrement in the streets are quite jarring to a 21st Century reader.
