Some were impressed by the scope and vision of the book, with one reviewer calling it “an audacious and disturbing work from one of the world’s great living writers”. Shikasta has been called an “anti-novel”,  and an “architectonic novel”. The last twenty pages were a force of will.
I bought it in hardcover and two of the subsequent novels in the series as well. Doris Lessing Three-Book Edition: This was so obvious in the book that it must be what Doris Lessing intended, but I have to admit I don’t really like that take on humanity.
The antagonist of all these cultures is the Puttiora system with its rogue planet Shammat trying to destroy all positive efforts and draining energy and wealth from Suikasta. Canopus, a benevolent galactic empire centred at Canopus in the constellation Argo Navis shikawta, colonises a young and promising planet they name Rohanda the fruitful.
My expectations were quite high, and as a result I was quite disappointed. The Diaries of Jane Somers. The Heart of a Tyrant.

Presented as a compilation of documents, reports, letters, speeches and journal entries, this purports to be a general study of the planet Shikasta—clearly the planet Earth—to be used by history students of the higher planet Lessijg and to be stored in the Canopian archives.

The Archivists are not reliable either.

Following Lessing’s death inThe Guardian put Shikasta in their list of the top five Lessing books. The Birthday of the World. I persisted, finishing shikassta thing. Sound a lot like religion? The library card you previously added can’t be used to complete this action. The Ice Wars of Dominia. Lots of diplomacy and secret agents involved as well, hardly any sci-fi-typical technology. Johor is an emissary of the empire of Canopus, lessijg to help the development of Rohanda.
