I mean I didn’t understand the purpose of writing it and when I got to know it was somewhat based on Agamemnon. This is a play about regret, disappointment, redemption, and hope. His valuable and highly competent contribution to the life of the school is casually exploited but not respected — or even recognised.

For an old man like Crocker-Harris, who gathers more and more tidbits of almost immobilizing heartbreak throughout the plot, both professional and personal, and for whom the sole solace is literature, like “Agamemnon” of which at the end he receives “The Browning Version”power lies in self-effacement — the impossible task of just getting through another day without the help of any bulwarks of stability.

The film, in common with the original stage play, follows the schoolmaster’s final few days in his post, as he comes to terms with his sense of failure as a teacher, a sense of weakness exacerbated by his wife’s infidelity and the realization that he is despised by both pupils and staff of the school.
