You love high-seas adventures featuring acts of derring-do, bands of murderous pirates with creative names, shipwrecks on tropical islands, overachieving cabin boys, and smarty-pants rich girls. It’s taken me awhile to write the full review for this, because I never feel I can do the story justice–but then, perhaps, that is enough of a review in itself!
Oct 17, TheSaint rated it really liked it Shelves: His gang of pirates plunder the ship of all valuables and kill the chief wireless officer. The descriptions of the deaths are short and not very detailed, but those with active imaginations could find themselves just a tad grossed out at times.
While I like Matt quite a bit, I’m more curious to see what antics Kate has him getting up to in the next book. It’s hard to believe that this came out over a decade ago I remember the first time I saw it on the new release shelf at Barnes and Noble and wondered if it was any good like it was just yesterdaybut it’s survived the test of time and each time I reread it I find myself drawn back into its world all over again. I recommend this to everyone, especially fans of the Leviathan trilogy by Scott Westerfield.
Airborn (Matt Cruse, #1) by Kenneth Oppel
Matt and Bruce begin looking for her until they find Kate hidden in a tree saying she found the cloud cat’s nest. It’s a great adventure book with a bit of a mystery. The descriptions of the island and creatures were very unique. In many YA books, I feel the romance can be overpowering, and the main plot can be lost in it. Kate de VriesMatt Cruse. I appreciate persistence, but she couldn’t see anything else but what she wanted and totally took advantage of Matt without ever recognizing what she was asking of him. I want me an airship!! While dying, the balloonist tells Matt about magnificent winged creatures. Overall, Airborn is an original story with wonderful characters.
In an exciting opening sequence, Matt rescues an injured old man flying solo in a stranded hot air balloon; the man later dies, but not before telling Matt of “beautiful creatures” that he saw sailing through the air. You think the kenjeth sounds incredibly juvenile. I have already purchased book two.
Kate is a fast talking, intelligent young woman, who might be a little bit too head strong at times occasionally risking not only her safety but that lppel Matt as well without thinking of the consequences. The dynamics of their relationship always leave me wanting more.

It is only after Matt meets the balloonist’s granddaughter alrborn he realizes that the man’s ravings may, in fact, have been true, and that the creatures are completely real and utterly mysterious. Other books in the series. It’s hard to compare airorn.

So yeah, Kate completely ruined the book for me. Everything bad that happened in the kennfth fourth of the book was caused by her. If you enjoy this series I think you may also enjoy Arabella of Mars. I admit that I am a huge airship fan, they have a romantic image for me once you get past the combustible gas and maybe my opinion is off because I was interested in simply reading about a story in kennetj world where airships rule if we could have produced helium rather than relying on hydrogen they may still be bigbut I loved it.
And sometimes it felt like the book was going on forever before we moved to a different part of the story. Matt Cruse is a cabin boy on board the majestic airship Aurora.
This book is reminiscent of the best pirate adventures of the past, but ups the ante by setting half of the tale in the air, rather than the seas, and by taking time kwnneth characterizations, rather than creating stock Baddies. The pirate crew are a mixture of elegant and rough unsavory characters that feel particularly true-to-life from what I’ve read on the subject.
I make a xirborn of this because Airborn is an excellent example of show-don’t-tell storytelling.
I really don’t care for first person books, because it gets really old after a while. Said it is one of his favorite books to come round in awhile. The sassier, I-just-don’t-care character. This said, this is an adventure book if I had to pick just ONE genre that is.
